Gold has a long and rich (pun intended) history, dating back thousand of years and spanning across a huge sampling of great civilizations and empires. As far back as the 2nd millennia B.C., gold was the means of value exchange and gift giving.

Gold coins became the currency of the times and were highly sought after for their value. These were used as payment for taxes, and exchanged between rulers of different countries.

Hundreds of years later it was said that the Lydian king Croesus, was credited with the first true gold coins. This was in the in the 6th century B.C., and followed the 7th century Lydian production of coins using electrum.

Electrum was found in the riverbeds and consisted of a mix of both silver and gold. It wasn't until the next century however that the Lydians were able to separate the two metals from each other.

Once they were able to do that, they circulated both silver and gold coins and that is why they were the first to be credited with circulating true gold coins anywhere in the world. Early gold coins from them and other civilizations typically depicted powerful animals on their coinage such as bulls or lions.

The Greeks primarily used silver coins until Alexander the Great and his father Phillip of Macedonia acquired a large collection of gold from their conquests of the Persian Empire and other lands. However, silver was still the predominate metal for coin circulation.

Gold was often used as a means of payment to the soldiers. This was just a matter of convenience. As the armies conquered other territories and acquired gold, it was easier for them to be paid with gold. This was very much the case during the reign of the Roman Empire.

The Romans created and circulated coins on a huge scale, as they usually did with most other areas of their lives. Coins were usually minted out of the most readily available metals and with an empire as vast as the Roman's had, coins were made out of bronze, copper, silver and gold.

It wasn't until the death of Julius Cesar that gold coins became used more frequently. They eventually became the dominant coin in circulation. The Greeks started putting the faces of their rulers on their coins, and the Romans followed soon there after. To this day there is a large sampling of Roman gold coins that remain in collections.

Following the end of the Roman empires, as Europe began the Middle Ages, it was left to the Islamic and Persian countries to keep the up the circulation of gold coins. This continued until Italy led the way out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance.

With international trade and exploration, gold once again became a very dominant figure. Gold coins were once again highly sought after and used. This lasted until modern times and until the United States, along with other countries, went off the Gold Standard and gold coins fell out of favor as a means of circulated currency.

Fortunately, there are many gold coins still available today for collectors and in today's economic climate, it's also a wise investment.

If you're looking for the latest information and great deals on gold coins for your collection, then a visit to http://www.goldcoinconnection.com is a must. From US coins to world coins, you're sure to find that one special gold coin for your collection.

The life-like dolls known as reborn dolls have created a lot of buzz, both of raving and rants. It has emerged into a controversy without any intention. From the term, reborn, it clearly involves the process of removing out the parts and the paint of the dolls, then painting them again in a manner that will achieve a look that is realistic.

Some few years back, sculptors began to make new dolls that does comes with taken apart dolls or vinyl kits were made available so that taking apart a doll's body would not be necessary anymore.

The process of making these dolls start with vinyl doll parts and plastic eyeballs. The dolls were used to be painted with a wash of color purple to make the skin's undertone look real-like, but it tended to make a doll look bruised. When applying paint on the outside body of a doll uses varying techniques to make the doll's skin look translucent.

Then it comes to an even more delicate process of adding effects that would create an effect of baby-like veins, blotches and spots of milk is used. The hair and lashes are made through tools catered for rooting and needles for felting. It is then baked to seal.

The human hair or very thin mohair is applied per strand and, would you believe, it would take up more than 30 hours to complete the hair for a head of one doll alone. The original body of the doll made of vinyl is then exchanged for a weighted body stuffed soft. Magnets may also be placed inside to help attach a pacifier or ribbon for the hair.

There has been an amazing rise in number of these reborn dolls being collected all over the world by many women and some men alike. They can find hundreds of these dolls being sold online through sites like eBay. It was found out that a number of these collectors are women who treat these dolls like a live baby.

It was considered in studies that cuddling a baby, whether real or not, releases hormones that cause an overwhelming motherly feeling of affection and fondness contributing to a fulfilling effect on one's whole being.

There have been some qualms with some concerned citizens. Some even went to the extent of calling these dolls down-right creepy. There was even one incident when a reborn baby doll was left inside a car and was mistaken for a real baby. And the police who responded to the call then broke the car's windows only to realize later that it was indeed a doll.

There has been some finger pointing concerning the unspoken injustice when it came to the public's attention that some of reborn babies were replicas of children who unfortunately died due to some circumstances or these babies are made for people who want to feel what having a baby feels like.

To the "parents" of these baby replicas, there's nothing wrong. The depression that may have led to the ownership of such dolls only tells us that it is innate human affection and interaction that prevails. It is such a heart-warming gesture of having, at least, the feeling of a baby in their arms.

So although collected for various personal reasons, there's no denying that reborn dolls are the most lifelike dolls of are time and chances are they will only become more "real" as techniques and supplies improve.

If you're looking for the latest information and great deals on reborn dolls, then a visit to http://www.reborndollhouse.com is a must. From lifelike dolls to accessories, we're your home for all things reborn.

Beanie Babies were originally launched in 1993 by creator Ty Warner. Beanie Babies were made much differently than a traditional stuffed animal, rather than using stuffing inside the animals, beans were used-hence the name Beanie Baby. The purpose of using beans rather than stuffing was to allow more flexibility and make the animals cuddlier for children to play with.

There were nine original Beanie Babies created in 1993. The nine original Beanie Babies are: a frog named "Legs," a pig named "Squealer," a dog named "Spot," a dolphin named "Flash," a whale named "Splash," a moose named "Chocolate," a platypus named "Patti," a bear named "Brownie," and "Punchers," the lobster.

Beanie Babies are not only a child's play toy but they are also considered collectible items. Though the Beanie Babies are collectible items, you would never know it from the low prices.

So what makes these Beanie Babies valuable collector's items? Well, a great amount of their value comes from a collector's tag which is attached to each individual animal. Each has two tags attached to it, one on its ear and one on its bottom. The tags are to be kept in good condition and it is said that should a tag get ripped off, a Beanie Baby will lose up to half of its value. To ensure that tags remain in tip top shape, vendors sell protective casings in which to enclose the ear tag.

Beanie Babies were all the rage during the 1990's. When Ty Warner announced that he would no longer make Beanie Babies he had to reverse his decision due to high demand. Beanie Babies were enjoyed by everyone, children loved the cuddly animals and collectors enjoyed them for their collectible values.

Spreading the Right Message

Beanie Babies are wonderful play toys for children and great collector's items, but what other purpose can they serve? Well, Ty Warner sent a great message when he decided to create Beanie Baby "Peace Bears." The Peace Bear itself was originally introduced on May 11, 1997. Consumers went crazy for this bear and it was highly sought after. Further, what made these tie-dyed bears so special is that each was designed to be individual. There are no two bears alike. This added to the craze. Collector's sought to collect as many as possible. There are many different ways to identify these peace bears, you can do so through the color, "tush" tags, manufacturing location, and tag generations. For example, there are six different color groups in to which the peace bears are divided. These color groups are as follows: Autumn, Neon, Pastel/Whitewashed, Spring, Summer/Transitional, and Vivid.

Teenie Beanies

Another important aspect we can't overlook about the Ty Warner Beanie Baby Company is the Teenie Beanie Babies! The Teenie Beanie Babies are a product of the Ty Warner Company working together with McDonalds. McDonalds' contract with the Ty Warner Company began in 1997 and lasted for 5 years. The Teenie Beanie Babies were a big hit and immensely increased sales for McDonalds. In 2004, McDonalds worked together again with Ty Warner and launched a promotion to release 12 new Ty Teenie Beanie Babies for the 25th anniversary of the Happy Meal.

Who doesn't remember PEZ?!? While this candy and the dispensers came out way before I was born in 1927 it still was a huge part of my childhood in the 80s and for many others as well! There is just something about the candy flavors and the little PEZ dispensers that allow you to be a kid again! If you like these dispensers or you are a collector of them, then you probably are on the look out for new ones you may not have as of yet. Some of these dispensers can sell for large amounts as collectibles.

The highest verifiable sale of these dispensers was a private sale of a Mickey Mouse soft-head at $7000 between an Austrian dealer and a California collector. This dispenser was never available for sale to the public, and was a factory prototype. The high prices which some items fetch has led to the manufacturing of fake PEZ items as well. The ones that I was looking for were the Football dispensers or more specifically - The Steelers! I live in Pittsburgh so we love all things Steelers! Unfortunately I haven't found it yet, but you may like some of the ones listed below, have a look!

University of Nebraska Exclusive NCAA Football - produced this exclusive Nebraska Huskers football for sales through a single store with two locations in the state of Nebraska which has made this very hard to come by! It was expected to arrive by July 2008 and finally arrived in early November, 2008! The University of Nebraska Huskers football are now available, mint on card!

University Of Utah Football - This is the University of Utah NCAA Football Pez. has produced a football Pez for the Utah team for 2008! These are exclusively sold through a single store locations in the state of Utah and have thus are more difficult to obtain. The 2006 negotiations with NCAA College teams included Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions and Texas Longhorns. In 2007, they added Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Louisville Cardinals to the lineup!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Football - This is the NFL Tampa Bay dispenser and it is one of the larger ones you will find around online at around 12" high! Now that is a big teamster! Even if you wouldn't use this as a collector item you could give it to a lover such as myself (go Steelers!) or anyone else for that matter. They have all kinds of different teams for the NFL such as Dolphins, 49ers, Ravens, etc. Still haven't found my Steelers one, but I will!

Obviously with these dispensers there is a whole lot more to it than just football options. You also have cartoon options for kids such as Spiderman, Sci-fi freaks will love the Star Wars and or Star Trek options, they have animals such as dogs, rabbits and monkeys, cars, and Nascar. They also have historical figures which were created: Betsy Ross, Daniel Boone, and Paul Revere which were released as part of the Bicentennial series. Pretty much anything you have an obsession for - you can find with these dispensers!

Flavors include; apple, cherry, chocolate, coffee, lemon, orange, strawberry and tons more. My favorite has always been the pink ones - I guess its strawberry but it could be raspberry! Whichever flavor you like - you can match it up with your favorite themed dispenser!

The Schwinn Bicycle Company was established by Ignaz Schwinn in Chicago in 1895 and became the supreme manufacturer of American bicycles through most of the 20th century. The company's rise and fall in fortunes over its lifespan has been widely used to exemplify the events faced by entrenched companies in a dynamic and propelling merchandising environment. There are some REALLY old bikes available to collectors out there. However, the ones I'm used to are the newer ones - the "modern" bikes our parents bought us as kids (I'm an 80s kid).

But I do remember watching TV shows like Wonder Years and seeing bikes such as the Schwinn. I think this is probably one of the most popular brands of bikes available. And the reason? Besides the name I think it has a lot to do with the quality and durability. I mean you can find a Schwinn bike collection from 40 years ago and if the owner kept up with it - it still looks brand new! You have a few different options to choose from if you are looking for a Vintage Schwinn bike.

First off you have the really old school ones like the Stingray Fairlady. You also have what I like to call "racing bikes". Obviously they are NOT racing bikes but you always see bicycle riders racing around on the Schwinn Continental or the Schwinn Vintage Le Tour Letour. Then, you also have the ever popular Beach Cruiser. I'm not even sure if anyone makes these because every time I see one - it has the Schwinn name on it! These bikes are good for new riders, old riders and collectors alike. One of the best places to look is at garage sales, yard sales, and even online! In fact, a lot of the time if you look online you might even get a price break or a break in shipping and handling (sometimes for free).

So take a look around - see what appeals to you. With Schwinn you really do have a world of choices to choose from! Other Vintage bikes you can check out will include the likes of Roadmaster, Hawthorne, Western Flyer, Huffman and Monark. If you are a collector then any of these bikes would be an awesome choice for you! If you really look around you can find plenty of bikes that are still really new - and can be worth a lot of money in the end. Or even if you don't want to do a re-sell you can just keep it for your own personal collections!

One of the results of the current economic downturn has been an increased interest in precious metals. People have sought to purchase precious metals for the purpose of hedging against inflation, diversifying assets outside of world currencies and financial products, and investing in a store of value that has existed since ancient times. World mints have struggled to keep up with the increased demand. A case in point has been the shortage of American Silver Eagle Bullion coins experienced in the United States.

At the end of February 2008, the increasing level of demand finally exceeded the supply of silver bullion coins that the United States Mint was able to produce. A suspension of Silver Eagle bullion coins was announced until the Mint could replenish its inventory. The suspension was in place for less than one month, but when sales resumed in April, the number of bullion coins that could be ordered was rationed.

The rationing process allocated a certain number of coins to each authorized purchaser. An additional amount of coins were allocated amongst the dealers based on historical sales levels. This rationing often made it difficult for individuals to find the silver bullion coins available for sale. Often when the coins were available for sale, they were priced at high premiums to the spot price of silver.

Similar suspensions and rationing programs were implemented for some of the United States Mint's other bullion coin products. This included American Gold Buffalo Coins, American Gold Eagle Coins, American Platinum Eagles, and fractional gold bullion coins.

The reason behind the rationing is that the United States Mint has been unable to obtain a sufficient supply of precious metals blanks to manufacture enough coins to meet public demand. The US Mint must compete with other world mints for the limited supply which remains available amidst the booming demand. Some other world mint have also buckled under the pressure and were forced to implement similar suspensions or rationing programs.

In 2009, the situation has continued for the US Mint. The 2009 Silver Eagle coins continue to be subject to rationing, although the blank supply situation may be slowly abating. The US Mint managed to produce a near record number of Silver Eagles during the month of March. Several other bullion coins have had their releases delayed.

Coin collectors, who purchase coins for their collectibility of aesthetic features, have also been impacted by the shortage. Under United States law, the Mint must produce bullion coins to meet public demand. They are not required to produce coins for collectors. This has forced the Mint to prioritize production to silver bullion coins and delay the launch of collector coins. The collector coins expected to be released later in 2009 include the 2009 Proof Silver Eagle and 2009 Uncirculated Silver Eagle.

Are you looking for different kinds of Civil War swords? Various types of these swords were used during the war, and many different replicas exist today. If you are trying to decide upon a gift for a Civil War buff, it might help to know a bit about the most common sorts of swords that were used during the war. While any huge history fan will love almost any sword you pick out, choosing the right gift will become easier if you learn about each type of sword beforehand. Let's start with something that everyone should know: during this war, swords weren't really referred to as "swords" at all.

Instead, most soldiers (and current history fanatics) refer to the weapons used during this war as "bayonets." What's the difference? In many ways, a bayonet is more like a knife than a sword, but this is not always the case. Still, when you are trying to find a weapon of this type from the Civil War, it helps to know the name of the item itself. Now, let's move on to the types of Civil War swords that can be found. You'll soon discover that there are quite a lot of them!

You'll most likely come across replicas of Civil War swords when you begin your search. While there are some authentic bayonets that remain, most of these are locked away inside of museums. If you do happen to find a real one, make sure to check for authenticity. One of the most common types that you will come across is the rifle-musket bayonet. These weapons were used in conjunction with a firearm, and then tend to be rather slender and curved. Another popular one is the socket bayonet that actually fit inside of a gun - a double-edged weapon!

Choosing Civil War swords for a gift can be a bit time consuming. Simply think about the person that you are shopping for, consider what they might like best, and choose the sword that you find the most appealing. Anyone that is fascinated with this war will adore any sword from this time period. Now that you know more about these bayonets, you can start shopping around for the best one. Make sure to purchase your gift from a reputable company, and always ask for an appraisal if that company claims that a sword is real - you don't want to pay top dollar for something that isn't authentic!
