Art can be produced in many different formats. Painters alone have a variety of mediums with which to experiment. At different points throughout history, a number of different methods were available to painters and during each of these time periods, one type of painting method was much more common than the others. In today's present society, all of these types of painting are given equal weight and study. One of these types, however, is that of oil painting. Oil painting takes the colors of the paint and mixes them with different types of oil, giving them different sorts of body and gloss which are highly valued in the paintings. Different oils will produce different pigments and other effects and versatile artists will combine these different pigments and effects to achieve the results they want for their painting.

Oil paintings can certainly be considered to be some of the most detailed, cared-for works of art which exist and as a result, many of the world's most famous paintings were done with oils. These pieces all require a great amount of time and care and as a result, most of these paintings remain in a pristine condition from many centuries ago. An original oil painting can be worth quite a bit of money. This is especially true if the artist of the painting took the time to sign their name to the portrait itself.

Autographs on art will increase the worth of the piece much more than if it was simply the work itself. The autograph on the piece shows the world that the piece is indeed an original and that the artist was pleased enough with the piece to put their name on it. This shows that the work was completed as was intended and that the artist is happy with the result. Having a work of art which is completed to the artist's satisfaction can be considered to be an important part of autographed art.

Due to the nature of the oils which are used with the painting, the paintings themselves may not be dry to the touch for a few weeks. Owing to this fact, many of the artists of these works will place their autograph on the work on the back of the canvas, or perhaps on the frame that the canvas is placed around. This provides a safe environment for the autograph to be placed which will not damage the oils of the paintings and allow the painting to continue drying to its satisfaction. The autograph is no good if it damages the actual painting and therefore, the artist must always be careful about signing any of their work.

These paintings have captured the delight of the world for many, many centuries. The amount of work which goes into these paintings has long since been studied and mastered by art students. Owning a piece of oil painted art is certainly a treasure. Having an original oil painted piece with an autograph is even more special and those who have one of these paintings in their collection should consider themselves lucky. This type of autographed art is very special and the owner of it should ensure that the piece is well taken care of.
