Famous people have always inspired the general public. We see these people who are larger than life and we wonder what it must be like to be them. These people are the faces and images of so many of our hopes and our dreams that we can't help but feel a connection to them. With an attitude like this, we shouldn't feel all that surprised that we incorporate these celebrities into our art, nor that we have for all time. From centuries old paintings of Bible heroes and saints to "modern" portraits of the explorers of the times, the celebrities of any era have been popular subjects for famous works of celebrity art.

Royalty was often considered to be the biggest celebrities of the past centuries as they had such a direct influence over the lives of everyone in the world. The fates of all of the countries were directly tied up with the royalty and because of this, everyone had an invested fate in the members of the royal family. Paintings were often commissioned of these celebrities. Additionally, some of the most popular icons of the time were figures from the Bible and different saints. In the days before television, theater, and the Internet, people did not have much more than the Bible, making stories and characters from the Bible be the most popular celebrities of the time. This brought about a great deal of celebrity art in the form of these figures.

As time passed, more paintings began to be made of famous world explorers, giving people an idea about who was looking all over the world and discovering new lands. As artists themselves started to become more prominent and recognized as great talents, members of the aristocracy began to commission these artists for paintings of themselves and family members. Being the most famous members of their respective towns and societies, these worked as a form of celebrity art.

During the beginning of the 20th Century, theater became more prominent and motion pictures were born. Certain actors and actresses became more famous faces to the public and people began to look at these celebrities in a new light. Artists became more fascinated by the possibilities which these celebrities offered and started to explore this in their work. These celebrities became the topics of different artistic works, from simply portraits depicting the grace these celebrities carried to critiques of the person and how they fit into society.

Some of these most famous works of art are highly recognizable. The celebrities are iconic images that nearly everyone who is familiar with culture can recognize and that is partly why the portraits are so famous. Celebrity art of Marilyn Monroe, whether by Andy Warhol or Salvador Dali, is highly recognizable. Other works of art are also famously noticed, such as some iconic movie posters of classic films by famous directors. Any collector who is looking to enhance an art collection should consider having some portraits of famous celebrities in it, as these highly recognizable yet rare pieces can lend an air of reputation to a private collection.
